A real, unedited example plan. Yours will be built for your grade and your pieces.
Grade 6 · 5 days a week · 30-minute sessions
Clair de Lune is a beautiful but risky choice at Grade 6 — it's doable in a focused, honest way if we scope this six weeks to the opening theme through the middle section, not the full piece. We'll fix the left-hand disorientation with landmark-based hands-separate work before layering hands together, building tempo slowly and safely.
Stretch
Debussy — Clair de Lune
Technically and musically closer to Grade 8/Diploma territory in places (the arpeggiated middle section especially). We will realistically target the opening theme and first section at a secure, musical tempo, with the middle section sketched at slow tempo only — not performance-ready in 6 weeks.
Week 1 · All sessions
Opening theme: left-hand landmark mapping and hands-separate security
You lose your place because the left hand jumps between registers without fixed reference points, so we build a mental map of those positions before adding the right hand.
Milestone · Play the left hand alone for the opening theme with no hesitation, naming each landmark position out loud as you shift.
Day 1
Debussy — Clair de Lune
Opening theme (first page, up to first dynamic swell)Left hand
Tempo40% · 36 BPM
Warm-up 5mMain work 20mRun-through 5m
Warm-upSlow broken-chord arpeggios in both hands, focusing on smooth wrist motion between low and mid-range positions.
Main workPlay left hand alone, very slowly, stopping before each position shift to look at and name the next landmark note (e.g. 'low Db', 'move to G').
Run-throughPlay left hand alone straight through at the same slow tempo without stopping, even if shaky.
Focus: Left-hand landmark identification and position memory
Naming landmarks out loud forces your eyes and brain to register where the hand is going before it moves, which is the real fix for losing your place.
Day 2
Debussy — Clair de Lune
Opening theme, first 8 barsLeft hand
Tempo40% · 36 BPM
Warm-up 5mMain work 20mRun-through 5m
Warm-upSilent hand-position drill: place left hand on each landmark chord/note in sequence without playing, saying the position name aloud.
Main workChunk the left hand into 2-bar groups; practice each chunk 3 times alone, then link two chunks together, checking landmark accuracy at the seam.
Run-throughPlay the full 8 bars left hand alone, slowly, with no stopping even if a note is wrong.
Focus: Chunking left-hand shifts to build security across bar lines
Linking small chunks at the seams is where most memory slips happen, so deliberately rehearsing those joins prevents getting lost later.
Day 3
Debussy — Clair de Lune
Opening theme, first 8 barsRight hand
Tempo50% · 45 BPM
Warm-up 5mMain work 20mRun-through 5m
Warm-upSlow legato scale (Db major) focusing on even finger weight and singing tone.
Main workPractice right-hand melody alone, shaping phrases with a slight swell toward the top note of each phrase, keeping tempo steady.
Run-throughPlay right hand alone through the full 8 bars, listening for a singing legato line.
Focus: Melodic shaping and legato control in the right hand
Giving the melody dedicated attention now means it won't compete for focus once the left hand's landmarks are added back in.
Day 4
Debussy — Clair de Lune
Opening theme, first 8 barsLeft hand
Tempo45% · 40 BPM
Warm-up 5mMain work 20mRun-through 5m
Warm-upRepeat the silent landmark placement drill from Day 2, slightly faster, naming positions in rhythm.
Main workPractice left hand alone with eyes closed for 2-bar segments once familiar, to test whether landmarks are felt rather than just seen.
Run-throughPlay left hand alone through the full theme at the week's tempo, naming landmarks under your breath as you shift.
Focus: Kinaesthetic memory of left-hand shifts, reducing reliance on sight
If you can find the positions with your eyes shut, you're far less likely to get lost once you're also watching the right hand.
Day 5
Debussy — Clair de Lune
Opening theme, full passageLeft hand
Tempo50% · 45 BPM
Warm-up 5mMain work 20mRun-through 5m
Warm-upSlow broken-chord arpeggios, same as Day 1, to re-settle the hand shape before testing memory.
Main workPlay left hand alone through the entire opening theme twice, naming each landmark aloud as you arrive at it, correcting any hesitation immediately.
Run-throughRecord yourself (phone is fine) playing the left hand alone once through, then listen back for any hesitant spots.
Focus: Consolidating left-hand security for the full opening theme
This is your milestone check — recording yourself gives honest proof of whether the landmark naming has actually removed the hesitation.
Week 2
Hands together, opening theme, slow tempo with rhythmic isolation
Milestone · Play the opening theme hands together at 60% tempo (approx. 54 BPM, quarter = 54) with no stops.
Week 3
Consolidation of opening theme + introduction to first transition passage
Milestone · Play the full opening theme hands together at 70% tempo (approx. 63 BPM) twice in a row without losing place.
Week 4
Transition and start of middle section, hands separate with voicing focus
Milestone · Play the left hand of the first 8 bars of the middle section alone, evenly, at a slow steady pulse with no missed landmarks.
Week 5
Hands together in middle section excerpt at slow-to-moderate tempo
Milestone · Play the middle section excerpt hands together at 50% tempo with the left hand audibly grounded, no groping for notes.
Week 6
Full consolidation: opening theme plus middle excerpt, musical shaping
Milestone · Perform the opening theme through the middle excerpt at 75-80% overall tempo, hands together, with dynamics shaped and no stops.
